Process to verify and update voter list for Bengaluru citizens has been started. Please make use of EC website to apply for additions, updates, migration and deletions. Revised Website and steps are very simple and self explanatory.

Here are some useful guidelines for the same.

1. For identify proof and address proof Aadhaar can be used.
2. If you are using spouse’s or guardian’s id proof for address proof, you need additional document to establish the relationship. Example marriage certificate or birth certificate or passport. In such cases keep both documents side by side and take a picture. You can use marker on soft copy to highlight sections.
3. You also have to upload self attested document. On a white paper put your signature and keep it next to original document and take picture for better clarity.
4. Taking printout or photocopy , adding signature at the bottom and again taking picture of this document degrades it’s quality.
5. Don’t send document pictures over messaging apps and download. This further reduces the quality and readability of the documents. Share them as attachments as you move them from phone to PC or phone to phone.
6. Once you submit the application, please make note of tracking ID. If you don’t get called within 2–3 weeks for verification, you can find your area BLO (booth level officer) from website or app and call them to follow up.
7. You will receive phone call for physical verification and you may be called to the nearest office or school for verification. If you are having trouble talking in Kannada, take help of your friends or neighbors to call back and figure out where to go for verification
8. Do not hesitate to seek and take help of volunteers from Poltical parties. They volunteer, help and assist BLOs to keep the voter list up to date.

Why is it important to have updated voter list ?

Rate at which we see inflow or migration of people in Bengaluru is unprecedented. Civic bodies like BBMP, BWSSB , BESCOM etc which takes care of basic civic infrastructure like roads, drainages, drinking water, street lights, power supply etc base their staffing and resources based on this data. We have delimitation of wards coming up in few months and it is very important to have close to accurate number in voter list.

For example we have 19 wards in Mahadevapura currently for 6 lakh registered voters. However it is estimated that almost equal number of unregistered voters also live here. This creates a huge pressure on civic bodies staff, officers and resources to support such a large population.

Please note that having accurate number of people living in a constituency reflecting in voter list will lead to appropriate number of wards and required staffing and resources.

Please convince people in your community on importance of this and help them migrate their voter idz to constituency they live in. Some people have reservations against migrating it from home towns. Please show them how seamless and easy the new portal has been and help them understand how it affects quality of civic facilities and services they get.
